Our winery of the month Crittenden Estate

We are show casing one of the original winery in the Mornington Peninsula with Young talented wine maker Rollo Crittenden

History

A quarter of a century ago the Mornington Peninsula was scarcely associated with wine when Garry planted his first vines at Dromana in 1982. In planting his first five acres of vines he doubled the existing total area of vines planted on the Peninsula at that time.

Today there are in excess of 2500 acres under vine. As a key figure in the region’s pioneering wave of vignerons, Garry was instrumental in forging for the Peninsula a reputation as a distinguished producer of cool climate wine. From the outset, he recognized the area’s climatic suitability and set about confirming it through meticulous viticulture and sophisticated winemaking techniques.

Over the years the Peninsula’s profile as one of Australia’s pre-eminent wine regions has continued to grow. With a thirst for exploring new horizons and charting unexplored territory, Garry helped to pioneer the production of Italian varietals in Australia. At a time when awareness of such varieties was barely at an embryonic stage, he helped to bring about an increasingly widespread appreciation of varietals such as Sangiovese, Barbera and Arneis.

 Tasting Pack available $285.00 per case (12 units )

Crittenden Estate;

More than 25 years of vine age and winemaking experience underpin the flagship wines produced under the Crittenden Estate label. Our Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines are among the oldest on the Mornington Peninsula and have, over the years, consistently produced wines recognized as among the finest examples of their kind in Australia. These hand crafted wines have built up an exemplary reputation in a rather short period of time. Known in the industry for their integrity and style, the wines are serious yet approachable. The Crittenden Estate range is what the Mornington Peninsula is all about enjoyable cool climate wines with intensity, elegance, complexity and finesse. Any wine labelled Crittenden Estate is made from 100% Mornington Peninsula fruit.

Pinocchio;

This range of wines is where Garry and Rollo have a little fun. Well more fun than usual that is. The Pinocchio label is a fertile ground for experimentation; something that the Crittendens enjoy. This enthusiasm is reflected in Pinocchios eclectic range of wines which will appeal to the adventurous and those among us who are willing to branch out and try something new. Having said this, over the past ten years consumer awareness and appreciation of wines such as Sangiovese and Arneis have expanded beyond recognition in Australia, as wine lovers begin to discover their point of difference from French varietals and their inherent synergy with food. The Pinocchio range of wines are best enjoyed with food and provide those in the company of friends with a wonderful way to discover, learn, experiment and embark upon a wine drinking adventure.

Geppetto;

Over the 25 years the Crittenden family has been involved in growing and making wine some enduring relationships with others in the industry have been developed. These relationships have given winemakers Garry and Rollo access to top quality fruit from one of their favourite regions in Australia: the mountains, valleys and high country of central and north eastern Victoria. Much (although not all) of the fruit for Geppetto is sourced from this region. The Geppetto range of wines is meant for drinking. Every day if you want to! There is nothing overly complex about Geppetto; what you see is what you get. Designed to be accessible and honest, you will find the wines are consistent in their quality.

Los Hermanos;

As a family we were at the forefront of promoting today's wine drinker's fascination with Italian grape varieties. Over the past couple of years we have been keen onlookers and admirers of a similar phenomenon with Spanish wines, albeit one driven more by wines from Spain than locally produced at this stage. Of course we are aware of the flourishing number of good locally produced Tempranillos and over the last year or so a handful of lovely Australian Albarinos have made their way on to the stage.
